eCourt Reporters: Two Women Tackling Court Room Scheduling

As two strong, independent women that met with the common love of riding their own Harley Davidsons, the friendship between Karen Renee and Judy Gerulat has grown to a successful business partnership.

eCourt Reporters is a two-sided marketplace for law firms, government entities, and court reporting agencies to schedule court reporters and legal videographers for legal proceedings held outside of the courthouse.

The women-owned company was created in 2017 out of a need for locating qualified, experienced court reporters and legal videographers.

Survey results show 77% of paralegals report it takes up to 4 hours to over a day to schedule one court reporter for a legal proceeding.  eCourt Reporters’ platform can now complete the task in less than 5 minutes.  More importantly, law firms can be as thorough in selecting a court reporter as clients are in selecting legal representation. Upfront pricing, a 5-star rating by peers, listing of experience and certifications are all seen at the time of booking.

In March 2020 when COVID-19 hit, courthouses shut down. eCourt Reporters pivoted to video conference training for remote deposition services. The summer was spent doing webinars for both law firms and court reporters to put in place all necessary aspects for the transition to video conference meetings.  Attorneys are now feeling confident to move forward with cases that have been put on hold during restrictions on in-person proceedings.

Karen and Judy are firm believers in giving back to the community.  eCourt Reporters is partnering with the American Bar Association Pro Bono Program. The website will soon have court reporters who can offer their services at no charge to the underrepresented population that find themselves in lawsuits. The goal is to have attorneys who are offering services pro bono to also find court reporters in their location who can offer services pro bono.

eCourtReporters has been honored with 2018 Legal Innovator of the Year from the StateBar of Wisconsin: 2018 Innovation Use of Technology from the National Court Reporters Association; 2020 Project Pitch It’s Viewers’ Choice Award; 2020 Doyenne 5x5x5 Pitch Winner; 2020 Governor’s Business Plan ‘Bright New Idea.’
